Abstract

The article refered to publications released by Institute of Rural and Agricultural Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences as part of the ‘Continuity and Change’ project concerning changes in rural Poland in the 100 years following the regain of independence, as well as Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak’s book Chłopki. Opowieść o naszych babkach. The Institute’s studies are scientific in nature and present the processes taking place in an objective manner, using statistics, among other things. The book Chłopki concerns the period after the First World War and is based on qualitative materials. In the article, the author showed that the assessment of the same processes from a contemporary research perspective and from the perspective of the rural inhabitants of that time often differ. This applies, among other things, to changes in family structure and customs related to the choice of life partners. The enormous progress in the quality of life in rural areas over the last 100 years has been accompanied by changes in customs that were difficult for rural residents to accept because they violated their cultural norms.
