Abstract

Aim of the work: The purpose of the article was to shed light on the early formation of the state sector in Polish agriculture during the first years after the end of the Second World War, and on the political, social and economic conditions in which State Agrarian Real Estate (Państwowe Nieruchomości Ziemskie – PNZ) operated.

Research method: The study draws on the relevant literature as well as archival research conducted at the Central Archives of Modern Records (Archiwum Akt Nowych) and the Archive of the Institute of National Remembrance (Archiwum Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej), with the historical method used to examine the material collected.

Key results: The years of PNZ’s operation coincided with the post-war reconstruction of agriculture and the development of the so-called Recovered Territories. Their area of operation covered the whole country, but the majority of the estates under their management were located on former German lands. The initial tasks of the PNZ included preparing large former German landed estates for parcellation, which was of major importance for the course of the settlement campaign, as well as running specialised seed-breeding and livestock-breeding farms. After the first period of operation, however, the authorities decided to change the priorities of the PNZ’s activities. From then on, the organisation was to focus on large-scale commodity production and, above all, to develop approximately 1.2 million hectares of agricultural land.

Main conclusions: Despite numerous difficulties, the PNZ also achieved a number of successes in developing estates that had been destroyed as a result of the war and post-war devastation. In 1949, the PNZ was dissolved for political reasons – the communist authorities were keen to remove the pre-war specialist staff, most of whom were landowners, from the enterprise. State-owned farms (PGRs) were subsequently established on the basis of the PNZ and the specialised farms.
