Abstract

The agrarian question is evolving under the influence of changing conditions and new challenges. As a result, the way in which it is addressed is also changing. In Poland, after World War II, attempts were made to resolve the agrarian question through the collectivisation of agriculture, which failed. There was a return to the classic method – industrial transformation, which was significantly accelerated by Poland’s accession to the European Union (EU) – mainly thanks to the mechanisms of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which is oriented towards the sustainable development of agriculture. This adds an ecological component to the classic agrarian question. At the same time, the driving forces behind industrial transformation related to manufacturing technologies are gradually weakening and new challenges are emerging. Agricultural policy in Poland, taking a course towards sustainable development, largely boils down to adapting the CAP. Meanwhile, solving the contemporary agrarian question requires a new strategy for agricultural development and, accordingly, a policy that responds to new challenges. The aim of this article was to outline these challenges on the basis of the literature on the subject and the author’s reflections. The article is limited to challenges relating to technology, family farms, capital, land and profits.
