Agricultural Competitiveness of the Regions of Poland

Abstract

This paper aims to evaluate the competitiveness of the agricultural sector in Poland at a regional level (NUTS 2) by considering the regional variations in agriculture and the necessity to examine it within more uniform geographical areas. The assessment takes into account the competitive potential and competitive position of agriculture in 2010 and 2022. The study relies on multidimensional data analysis, which allowed us to design a synthetic measure and develop a ranking of voivodeships according to both aspects of competitiveness. The research showed that, according to the ranking of voivodeships from 2010 to 2022, the competitive potential changed more than the competitive position. Wielkopolskie and Mazowieckie voivodeships can be seen as leaders in both areas of competitiveness. In turn, Podkarpackie voivodeship performs the worst as regards the competitive potential and competitive position of agriculture, at the extreme end of the spectrum compared to these voivodeships. Noteworthy is a clear improvement in competitiveness in terms of performance for the Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodeships. It is also important to note areas which do not fully utilise their competitiveness potential. An example is the agriculture of the Opolskie voivodeship, which in 2022 ranked third in terms of competitive potential but eighth in terms of competitive position. This situation, along with the current regional variation in agricultural competitiveness, justifies diversifying measures to support the growth of this sector.
