The Risk of Job Burnout among Farmers

job burnout, farmers, depressionAbstract
This article aimed to analyse job burnout among farmers, with a focus on the specificities of their work based on the literature review. The authors noted that despite the growing interest in job burnout in various occupational groups, farmers remain outside researchers’ interest. The article referred to definitions of occupational burnout and its relationship with other psychological conditions such as depression. It then outlined stressors specific to agricultural work, such as uncertainty related to weather and market conditions, social isolation, long working hours, and financial pressure. The authors emphasised that the specific nature of a farmer’s work, characterised by low control over external factors and high demands, predisposes to the occurrence of occupational burnout. The article presented the results of research on occupational burnout among farmers in the world and in Poland. The data proved high levels of stress and burnout among this occupational group. The consequences of professional burnout are serious and affect the mental and physical health of farmers, but also their families and the entire agricultural sector.
